US sailors claim radiation sickness

US sailors claim radiation sickness from Fukushima rescue

USS Ronald ReaganThe law suit states TEPCO downplayed the nuclear radiation danger until it was too late.
According to the suit, radiation experts who assisted in the decontamination say the USS Ronald Reagan sailed straight into a plume of radioactivity, which contaminated the ship’s water supply. Crew members washed, brushed their teeth and drank potentially contaminated water.
The law suit claims active and former sailors are suffering from cancer, blindness, impotence, and fatigue as a result of the radiation exposure.
The original lawsuit was dismissed because of jurisdictional confusion, but attorneys say they have retooled the lawsuit and will refile Jan 6.
They are suing TEPCO for unspecified damages.

FUKUSHIMA: an ELE, Extinction Level Event

Fukushima Equals 6,000 Hiroshima Bombs Today, More Tomorrow

There is No Place On Earth to Escape the Rad

  by Bob Nichols

(San Francisco) I received this Email with some Fukushima questions about a week ago. Now we have the Death of a Nation on 9/11 and the Death of the Earth on 3/11/11. Hmm, some bookends for us.

A good friend said:
“I won’t allow nuclear power to stop me from the right to go outside, to walk or hike, to travel or to breathe. I witnessed the activities of members of a Japanese community who dissolved radiation through the process of giving light. I know you say there is no evidence of that but I know it to be true. The group is called Mahakari No Wasa, (hope I spelled it correctly). You might look them up on the net.
I know it can be done. All I can say about nuclear waste is that I know within me that nothing has power over me unless I give power to it. I may die sooner but I will have lived my life.
Thanks for the copy of your Fukushima report. I know you are making a difference in the world. Keep up the work but remember, we must have hope.”

“WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO AND SAY TO REACH PEOPLE??!!”

“Your articles have been widely circulated in various social media outlets about #Fukushima and the horrific #nuclear horrors we collectively face.  It seems that the ‘Pro-Nuker Propaganda Machinery’ is ampped up in full force, and unbelievably, re-cycling old lies from 2011, with a wide audience and larger group of ….. movers of their distractions and deceptions.”

“Several people who have heard about Fukushima since the early days are puzzled that so many are “still alive”. Others, in addition to the psychopaths who apparently believe themselves to be immune from radiation poisoning, are those of the EXTEND AND PRETEND strongholds of delusions and galactic thought, along with the ‘end of times’ crowd expecting clouds to part and higher beings to ride in and ‘save us’.”
In “What are Efforts to Contain Fukushima? None” you stated: “You are going to have to make your own choices. You will live a little longer, or, die sooner by these choices, as will I. No one is exempt. The Radioactive Particles are all over the world now….”

“WHAT’S NEXT?  Friends, virtual and non-virtually, have said and asked things like: “

Questions:
“Question.   In basic math terms, in comparison to Hiroshima, how much worse is Fukushima and why?”
Answer: Fukushima, now, equals the detonation of 5,910.11 Hiroshima Atomic Bombs or it’s about 6,000 Times worse than the A-Bombing of Japan; and, it is still going strong, with no end in sight. That is equal to 6.45 Hiroshima Atomic Bombs a Day for 916 Days. There are only 336 cities on Earth with more than One Million people. That is the equivalent of 17.5 Hiroshima Atomic Bombs apiece.
“Question.   In basic math terms, in comparison to Nagasaki, how much worse is Fukushima and why?”
Answer. The Nagasaki Bomb was slightly larger; therefore Fukushima equals slightly fewer Nagasaki  Bombs. However, at this point, it makes no difference.
“Question.  In basic math terms, in comparison to Chernobyl, how much worse is Fukushima and why?”
Answer. At 916 days of growth Fukushima is 14.75 Times bigger than the Chernobyl atomic disaster in 1986.
The International Atomic Agency (IAEA) stated: “The accident at Chernobyl was approximately 400 times more potent than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima…” Fukushima so far is 14.75 Times worse than Chernobyl and growing.
“Question. In basic non-scientific language, what causes this to be an ELE, Extinction Level Event, and is there any shot at it being reversible?”
Answer. Throughout the time humans lived on Earth, humanity has never experienced radiation this high. The radiation and its associated Lethality is very high and will kill everybody. The Radiation’s Lethality will last well past the end of every one’s lifetime. No, there is no shot at reversing the effects and every human on Earth is included.
“Question. How long before we are tripping and stumbling over dead-dying bodies?”
2020 Tokyo Olympics Welcome
2020 Tokyo Olympics Welcome
Answer. In a sense we already are. Human fetuses are the first to die and are typically cremated at the hospital. We just don’t see them. Women, children, already sick people and the elderly infirm are next. Middle aged men are last.
“Question. Anything you recommend to lengthen ‘shortened-life spans’??”
Answer. “No.”
Question. Any resources you would direct interested people to?
Answer. “No.”
Question.  What other questions must be asked when confronted with an Extinction Level Event, and why have any hope whatsoever?”
Answer. Ask what is the published lethality of the all of the released isotopes and do not let the Empire paid trolls fool you by using radioactivity numbers; it is the LETHALITY that counts. When you find the numbers for the two Cesium Twins multiply by 14 for the Total radiation in a single release from an active reactor core. Multiply the combined Cesium137/134 radioactivity numbers by 5 for the Total radioactivity in a single release for old fuel rods. Those will give you a rough idea of the radiation released for that instance.
As for “hope,” that is fine, knock yourself out.

Who Really Runs Fukushima Daiichi?

Who Really Runs Fukushima Daiichi?

pointing-man
Much has been made about the contractor system at Fukushima Daiichi, the worker abuses and cut rate construction. This only looks at one aspect of the contractor system at the plant. Tasks like tank construction have been given out to layers of subcontractors but these subcontractors only do some of the work at the plant. Much of the work falls to what are called prime contractors. These are companies like Toshiba, Hitachi-GE or Kajima. The work they do at the plant is much more significant and frequently flies under the radar.
TEPCO reports work done at the plant including some of the dangerous inspection work to attempt to gain information about the melted down reactors. TEPCO rarely says exactly who is doing this work, if they are TEPCO employees or prime contractors. Workers Happy and Sunny both worked for prime contractors at Daiichi. Both mentioned over time the nature of the projects they worked on including varioius efforts to run scopes into the reactor buildings and efforts to clean off units 3 and 4. These two workers were at the plant through the initial disaster but have reached their maximum exposure this year so they are no longer involved in the hands on work at the plant.
Greenpeace has called for “GE” to be held accountable for the flawed design of the reactors at Fukushima Daiichi. This seems to ignore the reality that “GE” is still there and largely in charge of the disaster response and profiting off of it.

Contaminazione radioattiva in Italia: desecretare i dossier sui rifiuti

AMBIENTE - ITALIA, AMBIENTE
«Desecretare i dossier sui rifiuti»
http://www.ilmanifesto.it/attualita/notizie/mricN/10165/
rifiuti tossici
A. PALLADINO, A. TORNAGO
27.11.2013

Japan Reacts to Fukushima By Banning Journalism

Japan Reacts to Fukushima Crisis By Banning Journalism

Washington’s Blog
November 28, 2013

2 weeks after the Fukushima accident, we reported that the government responded to the nuclear accident by trying to raise acceptable radiation levels and pretending that radiation is good for us.

Image: Fukushima Nuclear Plant (Wikimedia Commons).
We noted earlier this month:
Japan will likely pass a new anti-whistleblowing law in an attempt to silence criticism of Tepco and the government:
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government is planning a state secrets act that critics say could curtail public access to information on a wide range of issues, including tensions with China and theFukushima nuclear crisis.
The new law would dramatically expand the definition of official secrets and journalists convicted under it could be jailed for up to five years.
In reality, reporters covering Fukushima have long been harassed and censored.
Unfortunately, this is coming to pass. As EneNews reports:
Associated Press, Nov. 26, 2013: Japan’s more powerful lower house of Parliament approved a state secrecy bill late Tuesday [...] Critics say it might sway authorities to withhold more information about nuclear power plants [...] The move is welcomed by the United States [...] lawyer Hiroyasu Maki said the bill’s definition of secrets is so vague and broad that it could easily be expanded to include radiation data [...] Journalists who obtain information “inappropriately” or “wrongfully” can get up to five years in prison, prompting criticism that it would make officials more secretive and intimidate the media. Attempted leaks or inappropriate reporting, complicity or solicitation are also considered illegal. [...] Japan’s proposed law also designates the prime minister as a third-party overseer.
BBC, Nov. 26, 2013: Japan approves new state secrecy bill to combat leaks [...] The bill now goes to the upper house, where it is also likely to be passed.
The Australian, Nov. 25, 2013: Japanese press baulks at push for ‘fascist’ secrecy laws [...] Taro Yamamoto [an upper house lawmaker] said the law threatened to recreate a fascist state in Japan. “This secrecy law represents a coup d’etat by a particular group of politicians and bureaucrats,” he told a press conference in Tokyo. “I believe the secrecy bill will eventually lead to the repression of the average person. It will allow those in power to crack down on anyone who is criticising them – the path we are on is the recreation of a fascist state.” He said the withholding of radiation data after the Fukushima disaster showed the Japanese government was predisposed to hiding information from its citizens and this law would only make things worse. [...] The Asahi Shimbun newspaper likened the law to “conspiracy” regulations in pre-war Japan and said it could be used to stymie access to facts on nuclear accidents [...]
Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan president Lucy Birmingham: “We are alarmed by the text of the bill, as well as associated statements made by some ruling party lawmakers, relating to the potential targeting of journalists for prosecution and imprisonment.”
Activist Kazuyuki Tokune: “I may be arrested some day for my anti-nuclear activity [...] But that doesn’t stop me.”
Lawrence Repeta, a law professor at Meiji University in Tokyo: “This is a severe threat on freedom to report in Japan [...] It appears the Abe administration has decided that they can get a lot of what they want, which is to escape oversight, to decrease transparency in the government by passing a law that grants the government and officials broad authority to designate information as secret.”
U.S. Charge d’Affairs Kurt Tong: It’s a positive step that would make Japan a “more effective alliance partner.”
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe: “This law is designed to protect the safety of the people.”
Rather than addressing the problems head-on, the Japanese government is circling the wagons.
Unfortunately, the United States is no better. Specifically, the American government:
As we noted 6 months after Fukushima melted down:
American and Canadian authorities have virtually stopped monitoring airborne radiation, and are not testing fish for radiation. (Indeed, the EPA reacted to Fukushima by raising “acceptable” radiation levels.)
***
The failure of the American, Canadian and other governments to test for and share results is making it difficult to hold an open scientific debate about what is happening.
Earlier this year, the acting EPA director signed a revised version of the EPA’s Protective Action Guide for radiological incidents, which radically relaxing the safety guidelines agencies follow in the wake of a nuclear-reactor meltdown or other unexpected release of radiation.  EPA whistleblowers called it “a public health policy only Dr. Strangelove could embrace.”
As we noted right after Fukushima happened, this is standard operating procedure for government these days:
When the economy imploded in 2008, how did the government respond?
Did it crack down on fraud? Force bankrupt companies to admit that their speculative gambling with our money had failed? Rein in the funny business?
Of course not!
The government just helped cover up how bad things were, used claims of national security to keep everything in the dark, and changed basic rules and definitions to allow the game to continue. See thisthisthis and this.
When BP – through criminal negligence – blew out the Deepwater Horizon oil well, the government helped cover it up (the cover up is ongoing).
The government also changed the testing standards for seafood to pretend that higher levels of toxic PAHs in our food was business-as-usual.
So now that Japan is suffering the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl – if not of all time – is the government riding to the rescue to help fix the problem, or at least to provide accurate information to its citizens so they can make informed decisions?
Of course not!
The EPA is closing ranks with the nuclear power industry ….
Indeed, some government scientists and media shills are now “reexamining” old studies that show that radioactive substances like plutonium cause cancer to argue that they help prevent cancer.
It is not just bubbleheads like Ann Coulter saying this. Government scientists from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories and pro-nuclear hacks like Lawrence Solomon are saying this. [Update.]
In other words, this is a concerted propaganda campaign to cover up the severity of a major nuclear accident by raising acceptable levels of radiation and saying that a little radiation is good for us.

Any time the results of bad government policy is revealed, the government just covers it up rather than changing the policy.

Fukushima: water radiation high enough to kill within 4 hours

28 October 2013 21:46

Radiation Soars 6,700 Times Legal Limit as Fukushima Disasters Continue Unabated

Written by  Sarah Lazare
'Clean-up' a litany of failures: near daily leaks, escalating danger, TEPCO and government cover-ups
TEPCO admitted Thursday that yet another spill at the crisis-hit Fukushima nuclear plant has released water 6,700 times more radioactive than the legal limit, adding to the near daily news of fresh leaks and climbing radiation pointing towards systemic failure to mitigate or contain the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.
At least 430 liters of contaminated water spilled  Thursday when workers overfilled a tank while transferring water without using a gauge. TEPCO revealed that the water that escaped had readings as high as 200,000 becquerels per liter, well above the legal limit of 30 becquerels.
Plant workers resorted to using sandbags in an attempt to absorb the leak, but TEPCO admits that by now, the radioactive water may have reached the Pacific Ocean.
This was just the latest in a series of near daily mishaps that, when added up, paint a picture of ongoing structural failure to contain a nuclear disaster that has only grown since a tsunami sparked a reactor-meltdown two and a half years ago.
While it is nearly impossible to paint a complete picture of the Fukushima emergency, given efforts on the part of TEPCO, the nuclear industry, and the Japanese government to cover it up, as well as the sheer scope of the crisis, Common Dreams has reported a series of key developments that occurred in September alone:
  • Tanks are leaking and spilling on a near-daily basis, releasing radioactive water into the groundwater and sea. Even a 'radiation barrier' fence surrounding the tanks burst a hole. There is no short-term strategy for containing the ever-growing amounts of radioactive water contaminated by efforts to cool the melted reactors.
  • The destroyed plant is extremely vulnerable to weather fluctuations, with storms and heavy rains resulting in the further release of toxic water. Facing the threat of Typhoon Man-Yi in mid-September, TEPCO released an unknown quantity of radioactive water into the ocean, in a bid to fend off further disaster, the company claims. As recently as Tuesday, a heavy rainstorm resulted in the leakage of at least 4 tons of toxic water.
  • In early September, TEPCO admitted it had detected leaked water with radiation at levels high enough to kill a person within 4 hours of exposure. To date, it is not known what the short or long-term health effects will be for the thousands of clean-up workers at the plant.
  • rare admission from TEPCO senior official Kazuhiko Yamashita that the "situation is not under control" was quickly covered up by other company officials and the Japanese government, as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe scrambles to convince the International Olympic Committee that the problem is manageable.
  • The Japanese government announced in early September it will invest $500 million to build a giant 'wall of ice' surrounding the plant. Yet, experts it will take at least 2 years to complete, and there is no evidence it will mitigate the crisis.
  • Despite the growing emergency, TEPCO is pushing to re-activate the world's largest nuclear power plant, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility, located approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Tokyo.

MIRTILLI CONTAMINATI

COMUNICATO STAMPA DI MONDO IN CAMMINO

LA CONTAMINAZIONE RADIOATTIVA NON HA CONFINI… E NEMMENO CONTROLLI!
